Statewide Interest: |
Advancing the application of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency is important for the State's future growth, energy stability, economy, and the protection of citizens' public health and our environment. State leaders have initiated steps to establish the state as a leader in addressing global warming and developing energy efficient strategies and practices. Initiatives will require planning, development and implementation of market-based alternative energy technologies and strategies. A coordinated effort is necessary to assist regional and local communities in implementing and applying sustainable practices.
Sarasota County is an established national leader in the energy efficient practices as evidenced by its green building and environmental policies, as well as its private sector and developer initiatives in building green and with environmental concerns as the first priority. The County will commit its resources to partner with the state, universities and private sector to construct a zero-energy LEED certified green building and promote alternative energy technologies to protect the public safety and welfare of our citizens and communities and to ensure the future sustainability of our state and nation.

Project Description: |
The Alternative Energy Center would be an instrumentality of the state to implement alternative energy technologies and sustainable community building to minimize dependence on foreign oil, and the effects of greenhouse gases. The Center shall serve to consolidate state resources to better coordinate and fund research, development and application of alternative energy technologies and strategies for sustainable regions and communities. Activities would include assisting in integrating energy programs, assisting communities in applying sustainable practices, developing a computer data base and information exchange system, holding energy conferences, and generally helping the state accomplish its alternative energy goals.
The Center, among other activities, also would:
Support critical market objectives to accelerate research from scientific innovations to market-based alternative energy solutions through research and development in cellulosic ethanol, biodiesel, other biofuels, plug-in hybrids, and other advanced vehicle technologies.
Coordinate energy and climate change planning and governance to assist Florida in accomplishing its energy and economic development goals at state, regional and local levels.
Assist communities in applying strategies developed by the Center in community building to promote and further sustainable best practices throughout the state, including integrating transportation and land use planning to provide for more sustainable growth and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Focus on developing zero energy buildings to contribute to reversing Floridas dependence on petroleum imports and reduce fossil fuel impacts on climate change and our environment.
Foster the creation of new technological jobs and businesses, enhance opportunities for existing businesses.
Assist in securing federal grants to further the U.S.s energy independence, promote interstate commerce and, if the opportunity arises, position Florida to attract a national energy laboratory or a research center.
