Project Description:
The existing traffic signal conrol system in MDC is totally dependent on a communication system between the raffic Congrol Center and the 2650 signal control cabinets in the field that is leased from BellSouth at an annual cost of about $2 million. In addition to being excessively expensive, this system is antiquated by today's standards, lacking the capacity to bring back the amount data (especially real-time video) needed for the optimization of traffic flow on the arterial network. A new communication subsystem based on a hybrid wireless and fiber optic technologies would resolve this problem and result in significantly better utilization of the existing paement infrastructure in Miami-Dade County.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Annual operation and maintenance costs of the communication subsystem should be reduced by about half, from about $2 million to about $1 million. Traffic flow improvements on the order of 5% should be attainable.
