Project Description:
We are requesting funding to assist the mapping and removal of exotic invasive plants from the 15 Coastal Dune Lakes. We would replace these plants with native vegetation, which would assist in the stabilization of the shore and assist in the prevention of sediment from washing into the lakes. The 15 named Coastal Dune Lakes in south Walton County have been identified as globally rare and imperiled by the Florida Natural Areas Inventory. The only other similar ecosystems are found in Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, and the Northwest Pacific Coast of the USA, so the preservation of thes lakes is so important.
