Project Description: |
The City of Mt. Dora hired DRMP ( engineering firm) Nov. 1999 to do drainage basin study of Lake Gertrude finding discharges from Lake John and the Dogwood Mountain Pond were significant sources of surface water pollution to Lake Gertrude. In Sep. 2005 the City of Mt. Dora funded DRMP to update their recommendations as to what should be done to reduce flooding and improve water quality. Recommendations included enlarging Lake John thereby increasing storage volume of Lake John, installing an outfall structure and piping from Lake John to Lake Gertrude, converting Dogwood Mountain Pond into a retention pond, installing a water treatment unit on the stormwater piping before it discharges into Lake Gertrude and installing a new outfall pipe from Lake Gertrude to Lake Dora. |

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Project is expected to improve water quality by reducing total nitrogen by 180 lb/yr, total phosphorous by 14lb/yr, total suspended solids by 3219 lb/yr and total dissolved solids by 3539 lb/yr. In addition to pollutant removal the project is designed to protect structures and roads in a 25 -year storm event. Finally, the project will include approximately one acre total of wetland plantings around the lake to enhance the ecological value of the stormwater improvements. |

Will this project reduce pollutant loadings to a water management district designated 'priority' surface water body? |
Yes |
|
Name of water body: |
Upper Ocklawaha River Basin |
|
Describe, specifically, how it will reduce loadings, identify anticipated load reductions for total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other contaminants, and specify the practices that will be used to reduce loadings: |
Nutrient loadings in basin will be reduced by implementation of 3 systems 1) by increasing volume of Lake John, stormwater retention is increased by an estimated 27% which will reduce contaminants through a natural holding process 2) an outfall line and stormwater treatment system placed from Lake John to Lake Gertrude will further trap contaminants 3) replacing the outfall line from Lake Gertrude to Lake Dora will increase the outflow rate of seasonal high water elevations that flood septic systems and lawns surrounding Lake Gertrude. Contaminants introduced from failed septic systems and lawn chemicals during seasonal high water elevations will be minimized by reducing by half or greater the elapsed time for seasonal high water elevations to return to the control elevation. |
Is the project under construction? |
No |
|
Are you requesting funding for a wastewater project? |
No |
|
Are you requesting funding for a drinking water project? |
No |
