Project Description:
This CBIR incorporates projects in support of the Lake Okeechobee and Estuary Recovery (LOER) and the Northern Everglades Initiative. The projects include the continued expansion of water storage/disposal and treatment on public, private, and Tribal lands. The purpose is to develop cooperative arrangements for the storage/disposal of water and retention of phosphorus (P) on operating agricultural lands, Tribal lands, and lands in public ownership. The result will be to reduce the volume of flow, improve the timing, and reduce the quantity of nutrients reaching Lake Okeechobee and ultimately the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie estuaries, which is a component of the Northern Everglades Initiative program. Eight water storage/disposal projects have been completed. Many water storage/disposal projects are underway with investigations and designs continuing for additional water storage/disposal projects with a goal of 450,000 acre-feet. There are also new sites being proposed and assessed. To accomplish the implementation of additional sites which are currently under review and consideration, we are requesting $4.2 million.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Water retention/disposal in the watershed and phosphorus reductions to Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie estuaries.

Amount requested from the State for this project this year: $4,200,000

Total cost of the project: $8,400,000

In which Water Management District is your project located?
  South Florida Water Managment District
Have you provided at least 50% match (that is, one-half the total project cost identified in this request? Yes
  Match Amount: 4200000
Match Source: FY09 South Florida Water Management District Ad-Valorem Budget

Will this project reduce pollutant loadings to a water management district designated 'priority' surface water body? Yes
Name of water body: Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie estuaries

Describe, specifically, how it will reduce loadings, identify anticipated load reductions for total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other contaminants, and specify the practices that will be used to reduce loadings:
Phosphorus loading to Lake Okeechobee will be reduced through stormwater storage/disposal in the watersheds. High lake levels will be reduced through holding more water in the watershed, also providing benefit for the estuaries.
Is the project under construction? No

Are you requesting funding for a wastewater project? No

Are you requesting funding for a drinking water project? No
