Project Description: |
The Drug Awareness Program is a family-focused early intervention substance abuse program that combines elements of a number of science-based theories and models. The program combines family therapy based groups, resources within the community, the natural capacity of parents, and personal strengths within the juvenile to interrupt substance abuse and delinquency. This program is licensed by the Department of Children & Families as a Substance Abuse Level 2 Prevention/Intervention Program and the only program of this kind available in Putnam County. The program provides substance abuse screening, multi-family group services, and case management to juveniles who violate the school systems substance abuse policies or who are determined to be appropriate for prevention/intervention services as a result of misdemeanor violation of alcohol or other substance abuse laws. The curriculum component of the program includes five sessions of multi-family groups followed by 3 months of case management and monitoring. This program is distinctly focused on the DJJ's initiative to strengthen communities through building and strengthening families. Critical components of the group process include mandatory parental participation. An additional benefit of the program is that positive changes that are made during the program positively impact in the home and act as a protective factor by influencing other siblings not to engage in crime and substance abuse. |
