Project Description: |
5000 Role Models of Excellence primary objective is to serve as a delinquency prevention/intervention initiative to male youth with a focus on minorities who make up 17% of the at-risk youth population, but represent 48% of juvenile delinquents in the most restrictive commitment placements. The secondary objective will be to provide dropout prevention intervention services for minority young boys at-risk of dropping out of school and/or exhibiting delinquency behaviors in four of the seven counties that represent over 50% of the juvenile delinquent referrals to the Department of Juvenile Justice in the State of Florida. The majority of the youth enters the program in middle school and continues activities throughout their high school and post secondary education years. Primarily, the program serves children who are being reared without the benefit of a father or a positive male role model. Students entering this program are guaranteed a chance to attend college or advancement to a potpourri of post secondary opportunities geared to the next level of education. Eligible students are employed in the program while in the program throughout high school. Mentors from the program assist students in this process with a dual focus, alternatives to delinquency and commitment to career opportunities through education. Services comply with the Department of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Plan relating to targeting the right youth in the right communities. The project addresses those youth who are most likely to enter the Juvenile Justice System. This description applies to the existing program that is celebrating its 11th year in Miami-Dade County. The money asked for in this request covers the expansion ONLY. None of these funds will go to the Miami-Dade County program. |
