Project Description:
There is interest by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) in having the City of Venice provide ground water to the Peace River/Manasota Water Supply Authority (PRMWSA) as an alternative water resource. The City of Venice currently produces water from the brackish intermediate aquifer. Peace River provides water to 4 wholesale customers, including Sarasota County, via surface water resources. Peace River and the City of Venice fall under the SWFWMD jurisdiction. Participation among the local water purveyors would result in a larger customer base, a stronger utility, multiple water resources, etc. The plan is to coordinate with the SWFWMD, PRMWSA, Sarasota County and other utility providers in the surrounding area to determine the desire and need to share resources. If the concept is acceptable to the purveyors, a plan of action will be developed in FY 2008. The City of Venice will conduct preconstruction activity (administration, planning and engineering) in the evaluation/feasibility of participating in, or becoming a Regional Water Utility Provider. The City will also pursue funding via the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, State Revolving Fund (FDEP, SRF) and the SWFWMD.
