| Project Description: |
| The South Florida Sports League (SFSL) is a 501(c)(3) begun in 2002 to provide adults and teens with recreational activities to deter them from engaging in destructive and dangerous behaviors. The adult recreation programs, such as flag football and volleyball have grown significantly since the organization's inception (flag football has grown from 9 teams in 2004, 62 teams in 2005, and 270 teams in 2006, as well as volleyball, which grew from 5 to 24 teams), as have the programs for adolescents. In 2003, there were 24 basketball teams in the adolescent program division. During 2005, the number of at-risk youths participating in the programs was up to almost 1000; there were 43 teams participating in the spring and 32 teams in the summer. The success of these programs has continued and the SFSL, seeing this success, has expanded the services it offers. In February 2006, the Foundation began offering flag football for children between the ages of 5 and 14. In its first year, the SFSL had 230 children participate. In our second year, our youth flag football grew to 490 children between the ages of 5 and 14. In February of 2008 we will increase our youth flag football to 600 children between the ages of 5 and 14. In June of 2007, the Foundation began offering youth tackle football and cheerleading for children between the ages of 5 and 12. In its first year, the SFSL has 80 children participate. The foundation anticipates that number doubling by next year's tackle football & cheerleading season!
All of these programs, until now, have been funded through private donations and membership fees, and have taken place at various county parks, making the program dependant on the park's availability. Now that the program has proven successful in its efforts to curb negative behaviors among adolescents and young adults and teach positive, beneficial behaviors,we are working with several government agencies who have expressed interest in housing our project in one location. |

| The measurable outcome anticipated is a decrease in crime among program participants during high-peak times for crimes, an increase in the teaching and demonstration of responsible and productive social behaviors among teenagers, a larger awareness of the components of a healthy and productive lifestyle for teenagers, and a higher graduation rate among program participants by providing these at-risk youths with a facility to go to. |
