Project Description: |
The scope of the project consists of the construction of storm sewer improvements in local streets within San Marco Island and Biscayne Island in the City of Miami. The improvements consists of deep gravity drainage wells, storm sewer pipe for gravity conveyance, new connections to existing outfalls, weirs, baffles, manholes, catch basins, cross drains, swale trenches and surface restoration. Note: Storm water from this project discharges to the Biscayne Bay. Biscayne Bay is a SFWMD priority water body. |
|
Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Mitigation of flood conditions in the regional system that will complement the SFWMD major improvements to the C-4 Canal (basin) which connects to the Biscayne Bay via the Miami River and will reduce flood damage insurance claims, and water quality enhancements to the Biscayne Bay. Biscayne Bay is a SFWMD priority water body.__ |

Will this project reduce pollutant loadings to a water management district designated 'priority' surface water body? |
Yes |
|
Name of water body: |
Biscayne Bay |
|
Describe, specifically, how it will reduce loadings, identify anticipated load reductions for total suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and other contaminants, and specify the practices that will be used to reduce loadings: |
For this project, some pre-treatment of the surface runoff occurs in the grass swales. Once the runoff enters the storm drain system, sumps in the storm structures will provide for initial collection of sediments along with baffles to retain hydocarbons. In addition, deep gravity drainage wells will be newly constructed within the project site and this will serve to reduce water quantity and improve water quality. Weirs, baffles, and detention structures will also be constructed immediately upstream of the deep gravity wells to reduce pollutants prior to discharge into the wells for water quality rather than allowing free discharge. Deep gravity drainage wells may provide approximately 75% reduction of total suspended solids (TSS), 50% reduction of total nitrogen (TN) and 55% reduction of total phosphorous (TP) from runoff prior to the outfalls. Also, the City maintains five (5) Vactor trucks and crews that will clean on a rotating schedule all drainage structures as required by the Citys NPDES Permit. This will not only remove all accumulated debris and silt but also optimize operation of the drainage system. |
