Statewide Interest: |
Providing community guides to secondary students in two urban zip codes increases the states visible commitment to academic success for low-income students.
The two zip codes selected have the highest incidence rates for juvenile referrals in their respective urban counties, (Hillsborough-33610; Pinellas-33705). The guides will have the tools to direct young people in these communities toward an academic excellence alternative.
At the end of the 2008-09 school year, young people from the targeted areas will have the motivation to access high-school classes offered in public middle schools and college-level classes offered in public high schools.
The state-wide interest served relates to ongoing public efforts to build a 21-century workforce capable of maintaining the states prominence in the national and global economy.

Project Description: |
Train 25 guides in each of two zip codes (33610-Hillsborough; 33705-Pinellas) to help secondary students with strong reading/math skills access rigorous academic opportunities offered in public schools.
Conduct monthly training and follow-up activities at participating faith-based/community-based facilities focused on:
1. Identifying students capable of accessing rigorous academic programs;
2. Celebrating students taking the hard classes (high school classes in middle school/college-level classes in high school)
3. Monitoring student progress as reflected in ePEP (electronic Pupil Educational Planner used by FL DOE)
4. Informing students of exceptional opportunities discussed during publicly held School Board meetings and other venues
5. Nurturing students in developing goals that contribute to preparation to tackle local, national, and global 21st century challenges
6. Redirecting local and national resources to support students capable of excelling in rigorous academic environments
7. Deploying high achieving students as mentors for younger children in their community
