Miami-Dade County - C-103 Canal Outfalls Retrofit

Requester: Miami-Dade County Organization: Department of Environmental Resources Management

Project Title: Miami-Dade County - C-103 Canal Outfalls Retrofit Date Submitted 1/4/2008 11:46:44 AM

Sponsors: Bullard

Statewide Interest:
This project addresses statewide interests through the improvement of the quality of stormwater discharges to the C-103 Canal, a canal under state jurisdiction. This canal discharges to Biscayne Bay, a priority water body as identified by the Florida Legislature under the Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Act of 1987.

Project Description:
This project consists of retrofitting existing pipes connecting the roadway drainage to the C-103 Canal. Currently, these pipes discharge stormwater runoff directly to the C-103 Canal without pre-treatment for pollutant reduction. This project proposes the construction of approximately 7,500 feet of exfiltration drains to treat the stormwater to levels compliant with Federal, State, and Local regulations before discharging into the C-103 Canal, a tributary to Biscayne National Park. This request also proposes the construction of 6 pollution control structures for treating urban stormwater runoff prior to discharging into surface waters.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Through the installation of the exfiltration trenches, baffles, and pollution control structures proposed as part of this project, the amount of pollutants carried by urban stormwater runoff discharging to the C-103 Canal, which eventually discharges to Biscayne Bay, will be reduced. The project will also bring the existing drainage systems that are currently discharging into the C-103 Canal into compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations.
