| In 2005, the State of Florida implemented the Florida Stroke Act which is intended to provide "rapid identification, diagnosis and treatment of stroke." In addition, the legislature found that a strong system to support stroke patients is needed in our communities in order to provide timely and appropriate care and to improve overall outcomes. According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading case of death and the leading cause of disability in the United States. |

| Project Description: |
| This pilot program will increase access to stroke specialists in rural communities by increasing appropriate referrals for patients via a telestroke program. This would be accomplished by providing the expertise and guidance for triage, testing for rapid diagnosis, and discussion of available treatment options. This will provide a resource for healthcare professionals in our surrounding communities working in hospitals without advanced capabilities for stroke care. |
