Project Description:
The "Alternatives to Incarceration" project serves the State by intervening with non-violent offenders in the criminal justice system. The project handles practically all cases for welfare, food stamp and unemployment fraud. The offenders are monitored, placed to perform community service hours, and allowed to make restitution payments with substantial savings to the state. As a result, the system is saving millions of dollars annually, which would be spent on the cost of incarceration. This appropriation will allow the agency to hire eight additional staff persons who are needed to cover additional courts and handle the increased client case load. Along with serving more clients this increase will ultimately raise the State more money.
