Sponsors: Bullard

Statewide Interest:
Miami MetroZoo, consistently rated one of Americas best zoos, is the only zoo in a sub-tropic region of the continental United States. More than 600,000 visitors enjoy the Zoo annually. It has reached more than 13.5 million people of all ages since opening at its current location in 1981. Miami MetroZoo reaches a broad and diverse audience including local and statewide residents, as well as national and international visitors. Twenty-five percent of the Zoos visitors are from outside Miami-Dade County, according to a 2005 study by Morey & Associates Marketing Researchers.

Project Description:
The Zoological Society of Florida and Miami MetroZoo, working under a partnership agreement, opened a state-of-the-art, $3.5 million, 7,500 square foot Education Center called Dr. Wildes World in June 2001. It was the Zoos first indoor, air-conditioned facility and continues to serve as an exemplary educational resource for our community. Dr. Wildes World features permanent and traveling exhibits focusing on wildlife and the environment, highlighting the Zoos conservation mission through a focus on our worlds biodiversity, with specific reference to flora, fauna and human cultures. The exhibits at Dr. Wildes World are funded through public and private monies. However, while some County funding, aided by Zoological Society of Florida funding, is committed to future exhibits, the amount is not sufficient. Adequate funding for future exhibits has not been identified. The requested dollars would partially fund the planning, development and production of future exhibits.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
We project that new exhibits at Dr. Wildes World will increase Zoo attendance and increase the number of school groups visiting, based on historical data. The Zoos more than 600,000 yearly Zoo visitors will be served by the cultural and educational programs provided at Dr. Wildes World.
