HB 6507 — Relief of L.E. by the Department of Children and Families

by Rep. Tramont and others (SB 6 by Senator Calatayud)

This summary is provided for information only and does not represent the opinion of any Senator, Senate Officer, or Senate Office.

Prepared by: Special Master on Claim Bills Committee (SM)

The claim bill awards $3.8 million in state funds to the irrevocable trust for L.E., a minor who was severely injured due in part to negligence committed by the Department of Children and Families. L.E. first came to the attention of the department when clear signs of abuse were evident to the hospital staff attending her birth. Despite evidence of numerous prior incidents of child abuse committed by the biological parents, the department negligently supported placing L.E. in their custody without proper supervision or services. Shortly thereafter, L.E., suffered permanent life-altering injuries caused by the biological parents. The trust will fund her support and medical needs.

If approved by the Governor, or allowed to become law without the Governor's signature, these provisions take effect upon becoming law.
