Project Description:

The City of Hallandale Beach in conjunction with a not-for-profit volunteer organization, The Friends of the Hepburn Center, coordinates and administers an After School Tutorial Program which provides education, homework assistance, computer training, and counseling to 250 low to moderate income area children in grades Kindergarden to eight. The Program also provides activites to children and their families which includes self-esteem building, crime safety and health prevention, youth entrepreneurial projects and mentorship programs.

In order to provide the programs described above, fourteen low to moderate income individuals are provided part-time employment to assist staff in administering the program. The program is offered year-round in conjunction with the Broward County year-round school in Hallandale Beach. The number of program participants has been increasing annually by an average of ten percent, necessitating additional financial assistance to continue to meet the demand of these services.

It is requested that the Legislature approve funding assistance in the amount of $150,000 to continue to offer the After School Tutorial Program to low to moderate area children.
