Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a major risk factor for the development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It is estimated that 780,000 persons with COPD reside in Florida. Many of these persons also have Alpha-1. The statewide early detection being promoted by this program will ultimately reduce state health care costs and improve the health of Floridians. Additionally, this program provides professional education for physicians, respiratory therapists and other health care providers as well as patient education, screening, detection and referral for specialist care as necessary. |

Project Description: |
Alpha-1 is a major risk factor for COPD, hence many of Florida's 780,000 persons with COPD will also have Alpha-1 and should be detected so that they may be provided with the appropriate care to reduce health care costs and improve quality of life. Funding for this program will provide professional education for physicians, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals throughout the State of Florida; provide screening and detection services free to individuals and physicians statewide; provide patient and public education to raise the level of awareness of this significant healthcare issue; and provide referral to specialty care for all Florida residents identified as Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficient. The ultimate impact of this program will reduce public and private health care costs through early intervention and improve the lives of thousands of Florida residents. |
