The Columbus Boat Program

The foundation has been and is working on developing a program to be used in the elementary schools. This program includes the large-scale model of the Santa Maria - one of the vessels of Columbus. This model is of a size suitable for the "touchy feely" environment of the elementary classroom. From past experience it has been found that large-scale models work well to enhance the learning process. Along with the model, a coloring-work book will be created directed at developing problem solving skills, introducing the geography and the seamanship as practiced during this period along with the problems faced by Columbus. To further enhance the experience an instructor dressed in a period costume to represent Columbus will teach or assist the teacher to bring a larger body of knowledge of this era plus a unique group instructional techniques to make for a memorable and lasting experience for the students.

Stage One of the program is implementation of the program into the Broward school system (potentially fifty-thousand students at more than 150 elementary schools).

Stage Two will be the implementation of the program into the Miami-Dade school system.

Stage Three will be the implementation of the program into the Palm Beach school system.
