| The project will help sustain the beaches at John U. Lloyd Beach State Park and the communities of Dania Beach, Hollywood, and Hallandale Beach in south Broward County. These beaches have been the recipients of State, Federal and County-sponsored beach nourishment projects several times in the past. Sand bypassing will increase the durability and decrease the costs of future beach nourishment along these beaches. Broward's beaches contribute $800 million a year and 26,000 jobs to the tri-County region, and out-of-State visitors to Broward's beaches generate $600 million in economic activity for the State of Florida. |

| Project Description: |
| The project, as outlined in the State-approved Inlet Management Plan, will implement bypassing of the quantity of sand equal to the amount impounded by the inlet. The conceptual design presented in the Inlet Management Plan shows a weir in the north jetty, a deposition basin adjacent to the weir, a groin field south of the inlet's south jetty (a limited application of this is proposed in conjunction with the shore protection project), and periodic dredging of the deposition basin to provide a feeder beach downdrift of the inlet. Since the 1999 approval of the Inlet Management Plan by the State Department of Environmental Protection, the sponsor has determined through further analysis and public input that the original conceptual plan does not adequately address sediment accumulation, updrift beach impacts, Port channel impacts, and impacts to updrift populated structures. The sponsor is currently engaged in a detailed engineering/feasibility analysis to determine the most effective and least impactive method to accumulate and subsequently bypass the sand. The requested appropriation is for the State share of costs for engineering/design and permitting activities. |
