Statewide Interest:
Implementation of the FARMS Program will protect public health by sustaining potable drinking water supplies from the Hillsborough River, Manatee River, Myakkahatchee Creek, Peace River, Prairie Creek, and Shell Creek Reservoir. Additionally, FARMS is receiving statewide attention as a model to other water management districts for addressing water quality and water quantity resource issues, and as a successful approach to addressing Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) issues throughout the state.

Project Description:
The project area is District-wide with emphasis on Northern Tampa Bay Water Water Use Caution Area (NTBWUCA) and Southern Water Use Caution Area (SWUCA). The NTBWUCA includes Pasco, Pinellas,and Hillsborough Counties. The SWUCA includes DeSoto, Hardee, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties and portions of Charlotte, Highlands, Hillsborough, and Polk Counties. FARMS is a best management practice (BMP) cost-share reimbursement program that involves both water quality and water quantity aspects. The purpose of the FARMS Program is to provide for one or more resource benefits that include: water quality improvement; reduction of Floridan aquifer withdrawals; and/or conservation, restoration, or augmentation of the areas water resources and ecology. Dependent upon specific site requirements, facilities would include, but not limited to water treatment systems, surface water reservoirs, tailwater capture and recovery systems, and irrigation management systems.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Implementation of Agricultural BMPs will improve water quality; reduce Floridan aquifer withdrawals; and conserve, restore, and augment the water resources and ecology in the NTBWUCA and the SWUCA. Also, construction and implemetation of water quality improvement systems on agricultural lands will assist in maintainung and improving the ecological functions of SWIM priority water bodies (Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay, and Charlotte Harbor). Additioally, FARMS is a component of the District's recovery strategy in Water Use Caution Areas, assisting in the restoration of natural hydrological functions. FARMS is recieving statewide and national attention as a model for addressing water quality and water quantity resource issues, and as an approach to reducing Total Maximum Daily Loads.
