This project meets a documented statewide need as clearly delineated in the Governor's Drug Control Strategy (Vision for Florida's Prevention System sub-section), Florida Prevention System, Recommendation #5: Ensure a knowledgeable and skilled professional and volunteer workforce through the provision of training and technical assistance that will continuously build human resources and advance the state of the art in prevention. 1)Provide guidance and support through state-supported training and technical assistance for prevention professionals and volunteers and "gatekeepers." 2)Increase the number of Certified Addiction Prevention Professionals that can provide quality prevention assessment, planning, evaluation, and programming services and assure a geographic spread of those professionals, particularly in high-risk communities. 3)Ensure that university pre-professional (undergraduate) and professional (graduate) development programs revise their plans of study and course content to adequately meet the current need. The statewide plan for improving Florida's response to preventing substance abuse has been endorsed by multiple state agencies, the Florida Alcohol & Drug Abuse Association, and a large constituency of providers of prevention services around the state, In addition, it will to produce measurable results as every professional development event or organizational change initiative will be evaluated and show measurable results.

Project Description:
To increase the number of adequately prepared personnel and training systems around competencies in substance abuse prevention services. This would be accomplished through: 1.Training for Competencies a)Develop a standard training program for all new prevention practitioners, as well as intermediate and advanced levels of practice. b)Tap into Federal resources and models to provide training that is responsive to current prevention methodologies. c)Focus additional continuing education to develop and management and leadership competencies. 2.Offering Comprehensive Training Programs a)Develop training programs designed around worker needs and substance abuse prevention competencies and priorities. b)Provide competency-based prevention theory and practice training through statewide and regional training programs. 3.Building Systems that Support Training a)Develop or improve systems to track employee education and training, particularly linked to competencies. b)Utilize state-of-the-art technologies to offer affordable and accessible continuing education based on the core competencies. c)Educate agency directors and senior managers to understand defined prevention core competencies. d)Promote credentials and competency-based training requirements for prevention practitioners. e)Seek partnerships with colleges/universities and other education providers to meet mutual practice and training needs of both prevention practitioners and students. 3.Building Organizations that Support the Use of Science-based Prevention Practices a)Provide tools that increase an organization's readiness tto adopt science-based practices. b)Facilitate organizational readiness through technical assistance or other prcesses.

Reduction in Drug usage by Florida's children Measurable outcomes are: 1.Number of prevention professionals that receive prevention core curriculum training and are prepared to achieve prevention certification. 2.Increased availability and accessibility of prevention coursework. 3.Increased use of science-based prevention practices in Florida. 4.Increased leadership capabilities among prevention practitioners. 5.Increased prevention-related coursework at colleges and universities.
