Project Description:
The Loxahatchee River Preservation Initiative (LRPI) includes representatives from the Town of Jupiter, Loxahatchee River Environmental Control District, Jupiter Inlet District, Palm Beach County, Jonathan Dickinson State Park, and Martin County. The LRPI has selected 10 projects to be included in their FY03-04 state appropriation request. All of them are located in the 277 square mile Loxahatchee River Watershed that covers northern Palm Beach County and southern Martin County. The projects range from Melaleuca removal in the Loxahatchee Slough to the placement of a sand trap in the Loxahatchee River Embayment area.

Has the project been submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection? Yes
DEP Identfying Number: SWR20022134

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Load reductions have not been quantified by project; however, the surface waters of the Loxahatchee River have monitored for quality since the early 1970's. Twenty-two long-term monitoring stations were established and have been sampled throughout the marine, estuarine, and freshwater portions of the watershed. In 1995, the Loxahatchee River Environmental Control District consolidated 25 years of data and developed The Water Quality Baseline of the Loxahatchee River. When the proposed projects are constructed improvements in the water quality of the Loxahatchee River will be measured through the existing water quality monitoring system and compared with the baseline.Project No. 6 - Jonathan Dickinson State Park Water Quality Improvements The two campsites in Jonathan Dickinson State Park (JDSP) and the Boy and Girl Scout camps depend on onsite water supply wells and wastewater disposal facilities. Both the use of untreated well water and onsite disposal of sewage pose public health concerns and the sewage disposal matter poses an environmental threat to the Loxahatchee River. Onsite sewage disposal may also be a contributing factor to the fecal coliform problem in JDSP, which causes the frequent close down of swimming areas. Construction of central water and wastewater facilities to all of the camps is proposed, except for Pinegrove Campsite. The Loxahatchee River Environmental Control District will provide central sewerage service.
