| Statewide Interest: |
| Alpha-1 is a major risk factor for the development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the 3rd leading cause of death in the US and Florida, and the only disease in the top-ten killers that is increasing. Florida has 780,000 COPD sufferers. Many may be Apha-1 deficient and improperly diagnosed. The ultimate impact of this program willl be to reduce public and private health care costs through early intervention; reduce the number of productive adults forced to turn to social security disability and improve the health of thousands of Florida residents. |
