CBIRS Request 1984

Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #1984
Port Everglades Security Program

Requester: Larry Strain Organization: Broward County Board of County Commissioners

Project Title: Port Everglades Security Program Date Submitted 1/15/2003 11:07:13 AM

Sponsors: Geller

Statewide Interest:
Port Everglades is among the world=s leading cruise passenger, petroleum and containerized cargo ports. Because it is an open port with considerable landside access, it is vulnerable to terrorism as well as drug and contraband importation and stolen property exportation. By securing the ports entry points by restricting access to only those who have successfully completed a criminal background investigation, we anticipate a significant reduction in smuggling activities and the potential for terrorist acts within the port. The proposed Port Security Program will add much needed safety improvements which will enhance the ability of Port Everglades to annually contribute $3.5 Billion to the regional and state economies.
