Project Description:
ITS components constitute hardware and software "on the streets", connected to the Traffic Management Center, which will - among other things - serve as the nerve center of the Intelligent Transportation System being designed and constructed to manage traffic on the Expressway and feeder roads from Tampa Bay and Gandy Boulevard on the West, through downtown and to Brandon and Highway 60 and Lumsden Road on the East. The TMC will also serve as a unified center for regional control of expressway and local transportation agencies from a centralized location.

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Using cameras and interconnected fiber optic communications, co-located police, fire and EMS dispatchers can improve response time, and emergency evacuation will be more orderly (should it become necessary). Electronic signage will be used to direct traffic away from congestion in the event of an accident or peak traffic problems. The TMC will also provide FDOT a location to begin testing of the District 7 Freeway management System. Quicker clearance of traffic and restoration of optimal flow, thereby reducing travel time and environmental impacts created by congestion. The TMC is designed to allow integration and incorporation of other systems at minimal costs and avoid duplication of efforts.
