Project Description:
The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners voted to enact a local supplemental compensation program for County residents of up to $750,000 above and beyond the State effort, to compensate residents for trees lost due to the State citrus canker eradication program. The local program is designed to complement the State program. The State issues a $100 voucher for the first citrus tree removed from a homeowner's property. The State will additionally issue a $55 cash check for any subsequent tree removed after the initial removal. The Palm Beach County program will then issue a $45 voucher to supplement each additional tree after the initial tree removal. This request for additional funds is based on the fact that Miami-Dade and Broward counties received $6 million and $2 million respectively in State funds to replace the tree canopy that was lost due to citrus canker. The Commission understands the vital role that a strong eradication program plays in this county in stoppping the movement of citrus canker into groves in this county as well as the adjoining counties. The burden on the homeowner should be minimal for the role and sacrifice they must play in the short term. We would request an appropriation of $750,000 be disbursed to the County to be used to match the cost of our local canopy replacement program.
