Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? Yes
Has the project been submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection? Yes
DEP Identfying Number: SWR20022137

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Program activities include shoreline stabilization and habitat restoration programs which will prevent erosion and/or resuspension of solids, reduce nutrients through uptake by native wetland plant communities, and filtering of suspended substances. Canal and stormwater system models and improvements include planning, design, and construction of on-site retention and treatment or rerouting of canal waters through wetlands, to assure that contaminants are not discharged directly to surface waters. Proposed monitoring and modeling activities will be used to accurately detemine pollutant load reduction associated with urban stormwater plans and designs. Past studies estimated that 11 pounds of nitrogen, 2 pounds of phosphorus, 398 pounds of suspended solids, and 53 pounds of biological oxygen demand are generated by land uses in a typical 50-acre drainage basin in the Miami River watershed in northern Biscayne Bay. This loading can be reduced up to 80% by upgrading old systems with treatment systems. For ongoing wetland pilot project near south Biscayne Bay, it is estimated that total suspended solid concentration will be reduced 80%.
