Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #832
University of South Florida Tampa Campus School of Music Building

Requester: Office of the President Organization: University of South Florida

Project Title: University of South Florida Tampa Campus School of Music Building Date Submitted 1/14/2003 5:10:41 PM

Sponsors: Crist

Statewide Interest:
The University of South Florida Tampa Campus (USF) School of Music is internationally renown, and provides high quality music education to students from across Florida and the United States. One of the first facilities built on the new USF Tampa Campus in the early 1960s, the current music building no longer meets the space, function, and safety requirements of today's School of Music needs and future growth.

Project Description:
The New Music Building is the #1 new construction priority of the USF Board of Trustees. When completed, it will provide roughly 175,000 net square feet of instructional space, and will include a concert hall for student ensembles, a recital hall for student and faculty recitals, several large rehearsal halls designed to provide choral, orchestra, and jazz instruction, an electronic music studio for the composition students, as well as faculty studios for students' music lessons. The building also will feature an Arts Library, several music-friendly classrooms equipped with instructional technology, and perhaps most importantly sufficient practice rooms to accommodate the nearly 400 music majors currently pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in music at the University of South Florida.

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Several positive outcomes will ensue from the building of this facility. First, student applications and enrollments in music will increase. The current music facilities are inferior in most respects to the music facilities of the area high schools, much less Research I universities across the region and state. This creates a major disincentive for students. The New Music Building will correct this. Second, the new facility will create new performance opportunities for not only the School of Music faculty, students, and ensembles, but also for a broad range of music performing groups in the region. The facility will represent the best kind of university/community partnership. Specific organizations, which have expressed interest in utilizing the new concert facilities, include area school music groups, the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, the Florida Orchestra, and the Tampa Bay Children's Chorus, among others. This means, of course, a tremendous, a measurable increase in public attendance at concerts on campus and a richer interaction between the School of Music, the College of Visual & Performing Arts, and the community. The facility will become a part of the attraction for cultural events on campus. Third, this facility will enhance the research and creative agenda of the School of Music and the College of Visual & Performing Arts. Plans include provisions to be able to record, edit, and produce professional-quality recordings - both audio and video - in these facilities. Through a current partnership with the Internet2 Project, plans also are in the works to anticipate live Internet broadcast of USF Music Events globally.
