Project Description:
The Lower St. Johns River Basin Initiative is an ongoing effort to restore and enhance the lower St. Johns River and its tributaries. Many factors threaten the health of the lower St. Johns River. As urban growth increased, so did the discharge of wastewater and storm water from the urban areas. The increase of discharge has resulted in a steady decline in the river's quality. Farming has also had an impact on the river in the form of agricultural runoff. All of these factors contribute to algal blooms, which block the sunlight from reaching aquatic plants. These algal blooms ultimately affect the manatee and fish that depend on the plants for food and habitat. Blooms of some algal species have a direct impact on fish and other wildlife. Funding through this initiative will help restore and enhance the river. Examples follow of subporjects that could be funded through this request.
