Project Description: |
This project is a capital outlay request for the development of a 6.38 acre conservation park in a substantially underserved urban area. This parcel will be acquired through the Broward County Bond Challenge Grant program and a grant from the Florida Communities Trust at a cost of $845,500. Additionally, Broward County will provide $116,000 to implement a Conservation Land Ecological Restoration Plan, which will focus on removing invasive exotic species, replanting with native species associated with South Florida bottomland hammock communities, hydrology management, resource protection and management practices for listed species.
The Broward County Comprehensive Land Use Plan establishes a minimum of three acres of park and/or open space per one thousand residents to meet quality of life concerns. The City of Lauderdale Lakes, which has adopted this standard, needs a minimum of ninety-five acres. Even after acquisition of this 6.38 acre parcel the City is deficient by almost sixty-five acres or sixty-eight per cent. This project supports the goals of the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) in protecting and acquiring a unique natural habitat and ecological system, and expanding state and local efforts to provide recreation opportunities to urban areas. This project will provide for development of this conservation park with construction of amenities, which will include a walking trail, educational and interpretive signs, benches and native landscaping.
