Project Description: |
The USF Sarasota/Manatee campus currently offers the majority of its courses with large enrollments in the late afternoon and evening hours. The Sarasota/Manatee campus consistently experiences a shortage of appropriate classrooms during the peak demand hours. In addition, the campus facilities are inadequate technologically, in terms of mediated learning, distance learning, and computing capability. Given the historic nature of many of the buildings on the existing campus, it is difficult to satisfactorily retrofit the existing facilities to meet the classroom and technology needs. In order to support the recent and anticipated growth in both undergraduate and graduate programs in the Sarasota/Manatee area, the University requests an academic facility to expand the campus.
The campus board, dean, faculty, students and the Community Leadership Council are concerned about the classroom shortage and the technology needs and the tools necessary for quality education delivery on to the Sarasota/Manatee campus students. The goal is to build a facility that will meet current academic comupter technology and distance learning standards, while providing a variety of standard academic classroom spaces, office, and support spaces. The facility will be designed for flexibility to meet the ever-changing technology needs in the future. The building facility would also incorporate state of the art technology and including distance learning -send and receive capabilities. Additionally the changed status of the campus as a result of legislative action will require additional space for infrastructure administrative support and additional instructional space based on community interests in expanded academic programming, a hospitality and tourism management program and health care initiatives. This would provide for an increase of 5500 sq. ft. in net assignable sq. footage to a total of 64,093 sq. ft. and a gross total of 96,140 sq. ft.
The target population includes students seeking opportunities to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees, the USF Sarasota/Manatee student profile shows 34% are full-time, 66% are part time, 74% are undergraduate, while 11% are graduate, and 15% unclassified, 73% are female and 27% are male, and the average age is 32.
Square foot costs were generated with SUS date for the comparable USF Education II project on the Tampa Campus, but not adjusted to the year of construction per the CIP instructions. The extraordinary costs were developed based on analysis of the cost for the development of a first phase of construction on the remote and totally undeveloped Crosley property, including provision of utilities to the site and parking. Educational Plant survey process is being implemented. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
New facilities will accommodate the planned 4800 annual student enrollment at the Sarasota Manatee campus in high demand workforce programs. Access to degree programs will more than double from 2000 to 4800 citizens since 2002 when the legislature granted fiscal autonomy to the USF branches and funded 15 additional full degree programs including a School of Hotel and Restaurant Managment. |
