Statewide Interest: |
This project provides long-term information, education, guidance and support to people with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and their families, as well as community and state agencies and programs so that people with TBI may remain in their communities as contributing members of society. TBI affects approximately 300,000 people in Florida, who have life-long problems as a result of their injuries. Outside of the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program Medicaid Waiver (which is limited to 200 people), BIAF is the only organization in Florida that provides long-term support for these under-served people who have no other place to turn. |

Project Description: |
This proposed project is an integral part of a unique, statewide public/private delivery system that serves a population not served by any other state agency or program: people with TBI and their families. Individuals who incur a moderate to severe TBI are mandated by Florida law to be reported by hospitals to the Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Central Registry. If eligible, short-term rehabilitation services are provided by the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP). When this rehabilitation ends and the individual is placed in the community, Brain Injury Association of Florida (BIAF), a statewide private, nonprofit organization, is made available to provide continuing, long-term support as needed in order to help the person and family remain in the sommunity as a contributing citizen. This project targets the needs of both the person living with TBI, the family and the community and is part of a continuum of services that ranges from access to a toll free HELPLINE, internet sites, printed educational materials, resource directories and TBI prevention and education to home visits by Family Support Specialists funded by this request. |
