Project Description:
This proposal requests $225,000 for a project designed to reduce the overwhelming number of children suffering from mental health problems and reduce the need for foster care placement. The State of Florida's Strategic Plan for Infant Mental Health was developed to strengthen the emotional development of children. Emotional support and guidance can help parents to foster healthy social and emotional and cognitive development and detect problems in their earliest states when treatment is most effective. Early intervention is designed to alleviate disorders of childhood including depression, traumatic stress disorders, attachment disorders and many more mental and emotional disorders that will undermine success in school and life. By assisting parents and caretakers recognize the importance of quality care, forming attachments, and providing rich experiences, we foster future success and well being. Thus requested funds will be used for start up costs to train staff as well as raise community awareness and support of this program.

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
A) Provide relevant training for 10 staff members who will serve identified infants and families within the community. B) Raise community and professional awareness of the need for Infant Mental Health Programs by making (24) presentations during the year. Participants will be provided with a pre and post test related to Infant Mental Health Issues. C) Provide screening, assessment and referral to (20) families per month for children birth to age five. These referrals include court, Dept. of Children and Families and other community agencies at no cost to the family. D) 90% of families will be successfully engaged and benefit from the treatment provided, as evidenced by increased level of family functioning scores.
