Kinship care is the full-time care and nurturance of a child by a relative caregiver with the intent to safely maintain and strengthen the family unit, helping prevent children from entering foster care. To assist these unique families, the Florida Kinship Center develops, maintains and disseminates a statewide database of resources, coordinates a network of kinship care support groups, provides training and technical assistance, and conducts research around best practices. These initiatives are designed to ensure the safety, stability and permanence of children ages 0-18 being raised by grandparents and other relatives throughout Florida.

Project Description:
Continuation services funding for the Florida Kinship Center to 1) coordinate and continue the development of the Florida Kinship (FLKIN) Network ( a network of the support groups, agencies, and educational institutions providing kinship care services throughout the state), including 2) operation and promotion of the 1-800-Warmline (640-6444) and www.flkin.org website, and 3) training and technical assistance to community-based care lead agencies in the child welfare and aging networks, via 4) training, curriculum development, and dissemination of evidence-based practices, and 5) research and public education around kinship care concerns. Enhanced service funding to establish a legal hotline and publish and disseminate a legal handbook.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
100% of kinship caregivers raising children will be eligible to 1) receive support and referral from the Florida Kinship Center, Warmline, and FLKIN Network and 2) seek legal assistance via a legal hotline to establish legal custody arrangements.
