Project Description: |
This project would entail the construction of a 10,000 square foot area on the second floor of the soon-to be-constructed Broward County Library Facility located in the City of Lauderdale Lakes.. The second floor would be utilized as a special FCAT Study Center, equipped with computers, study rooms and educational resources. The facility would also provide a variety of programs focused on academic achievement, primarily in the area of reading comprehension.
The City of Lauderdale Lakes and Broward County Public Schools would partner to promote this project. Test scores of all public schools within this jurisdiction testify to the need for such a facility and service. Throughout the school year, volunteers consisting of City representatives, advisory board members, school board representatives, college students and corporate partners will be encouraged to participate in "Operation Pass", a program designed to aggressively work with high school students to pass the FCAT. The second floor area would serve as a focused learning center for this purpose.
Currently, the City of Lauderdale Lakes is faced with a growing illiteracy rate due to the influx of multi-ethnic families that do not fully comprehend the English language. This challenge has warranted a need to utilize an existing curriculum, which includes reading comprehension techniques that have proven to successfully educate children and reduce illiteracy in a focused learning facility. In addition, the facility would be used to conduct GED and ESOL adult classes, as expressed by residents as the two highest educational needs. This facility would also be made available for community groups conducting activities that address educational goals on a city, state and federal level.
Funding would be used for construction of the second floor and limited classroom equipment. In-kind services from the City's local business partners would be included. |
