Project Description: |
Communities in Schools (formerly Cities in Schools) is the nation's largest stay-in-school network. By refocusing community service providers to work as a team, serving along-side teachers, principals, volunteers and mentors, CIS connects the schools with the resources at-risk kids need to not only stay in school, but to achieve more both academically and socially. Board members of CIS include CFO Tom Gallagher and First Lady Laura Bush is a spokesperson. The Florida Chamber of Commerce, in their annual Cornerstone Report called for CIS to be expanded into every county in Florida and Worth Magazine named CIS as one of the top 100 charities doing the best job "dollar for dollar," for those they serve. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Last year, about 87% of students tracked for poor attendance improved attendance rates, about 86% of students tracked for discipline problems improved acceptable discipline, and about 86% of students tracked for academic performance improved academic achievement. In 2002, before funding was substantially reduced, CIS Florida served 34,677 at-risk students at 210 schools in 17 counties and 93% of the students tracked for promotion risk were promoted to the next grade. The graduation rate among CIS students eligible for graduation was 94% (NOT including students pursuing their GEDs) and 97% of students tracked as potential dropouts remained in school at the end of the 2001-2002 school year. Measurable Outcome Anticipated would be to maintain or increase current outcome levels for the student population being served by CIS Florida. |
