Statewide Interest: |
The Airport has become the 3rd busiest international arrival airport in the state (14th in the US), the 2nd busiest in operations, and is one of the fastest growing in the domestic airline market. This is due to the state's investment in airport infrastructure.
Continued development of this airport is essential in meeting the needs of Floridians and visitors. In order to broaden the airports non-aviation revenues, thus contributing to greater self-sufficiency, the Sanford Airport authority is seeking to develop commercial and industrial properties on site that were contaminated by the U.S. Navy. Recent studies by the Department of Transporation indicate that the Airport contributes more than $1.8 billion of economic impact on the region's ecomony, as well as over 26,000 airport related jobs. |

Project Description: |
The Airport sits on the site of the former Navy Air Station which was closed in 1968. There are 5 locations where military fuel tanks leaked aviation fuel in the surrounding soil and groundwater. The airport has spent funds to clean up portions of 2 sites. The remaining sites are not buildable, yet the occupy prime real estate that could be converted into revenue producing property for commercial and economic development purposes. The US Department of Commerce has recently granted a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) license to the airport, however the old fuel tanks must be removed and the site cleaned up in order to fully access the benefits of the FTZ. The US Army Corps has completed studies and has determined that the site must be remediated. However, they are placing the funding responsibility on the State, specifically the trust fund for contaminated fule farm clean-up. |
