Project Title: Naval Air Station Sanford Memorial Park Date Submitted 1/15/2004 7:10:32 PM

Sponsors: Constantine

Statewide Interest:
On the grounds of the Orlando Sanford International Airport this memorial park commemorates and preserves the relationship between the US Navy and the City of Sanford that existed while the former Naval Air Station Sanford was open between the years 1942 - 1968. It provides an opportunity for local residents and visitors to step back in time and better understand our state's heritage of Naval Aviation. The State of Florida served a very important role in the training and qualification of Naval Aviators in defense of the country.

Project Description:
This project includes the acquisition, restoration and installation of a US Navy PV-1 Ventura aircraft on the park site. This historic aircraft was the first fleet aircraft based out of NAS Sanford during the early years of World War II and participated in several successful and strategic engagements against the enemy in both the Atlantic and Pacific areas of operations. This park development will add driveways, signage, landscape, parking areas and an aviation themed children's playground. This park has been very popular and daily attendees have increased to such an extent that paved paring and other park infrastructure and displays are necessary. To date over $23,000 of in kind donations have been received in the form of disassembly crews labor and over the road transportation from California to the Sanford site. This request to fulfill our wish to honor the vets that served their country.
