Drug Free Youth In Town

Requester: Barbara Zohlman Organization: Drug Free Youth In Town

Project Title: Drug Free Youth In Town Date Submitted 1/15/2004 4:38:02 PM

Sponsors: Margolis

Statewide Interest:
D-FY-IT serves a compelling state interest by providing a cost-effective and efficient mechanism to prevent current and future generations from choosing a destructive and costly drug-using path. The cost of one school is exponentially less than the cost of treating one child who becomes addicted to drugs.

Project Description:
Drug-Free Youth in Town (D-FY-IT) is a community-based drug prevention program in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties that focuses on and gives recognition to students who choose a drug-free lifestyle. D-FY-IT is currently in 42 local public middle and high schools in Dade County with an enrollment in the 2002-2003 school year of over 7,000 student members. In addition, D-FY-IT impacts literally tens of thousands of students at each of these schools. Our members are drug-free and willing to prove it by submitting to an initial drug test and subsequent random drug screenings. Membership is strictly voluntary. Students participate in community service activities such as providing food to the needy, cleaning up our beaches, or assisting other charitable organizations. Many area merchants recognize the efforts of our students by providing them discounts on various consumables and services. Our membership is comprised of students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds (70% are minority students). D-FY-IT has received funding for the last 4 cycles; in 1997-98, we received a $600,000 appropriation through the Department of Juvenile Justice. In 1998-99, we received $425,000 through the Department of Health. And we received $500,000 in both budget years 99-00 and 00-01 (which included a joint grant for Dade and Broward Counties) from the Department of Health. This year we received $425,000 from the Supplemental Budget administered through the Department of Children and Families (DCF) which was incorporated into our existing grant from DCF to total $502,000. Previously, most of our state revenue has been from Tobacco dollars administered through the Department of Health. This year, we are requesting $1,000,000 to be placed in DCF/Department of Health budgets in recurring revenue. The sum of $500,000 would be used to maintain our services for our current program and the sum of $500,000 would be used to expand our program outside of Dade and Broward Counties.

Over 50,000 hours of increased community service hours by DFYIT students which benefits the community overall. Finally, a direct increase in parental involvement in DFYIT parent clubs.
