Project Description:
Many small and medium sized not for profit organizations throughout the state of Florida have capacity building plans for physical or program expansion, or for increasing their profitability, while maintaining their mission driven focus. As the not for profit sector has traditionally been spearheaded by volunteers, many of these organizations have rudimentary skills in project management, accounting and financial management. In addition, many educational organizations, including schools, need training in the use of Information Technology to improve their management skills and practices. This need has been identified from an ASTC session in 2003 on increasing profitability, in consultation with Board members who are practicing accountants and through informal discussions with colleagues. The Museum already has in place performance tracking measures and a cost/mission analysis process for projects. It has also provided state wide programs for training teachers in the use of the Palm Pilot as a management tool (Florida Leaders Network,)and is one of ten national trainers for this. We would now like to continue the upgrading of our IT systems, acquire some additional software and then propose professional development programs using information technology to improve project management and financial planning. The project management would be applied to both educational programs and to the physical building process, whether exhibits, building refurbishments or infrastructure and building programs. Financial planning would include the management accounts and financial and other information necessary to measure performance and improve profitability. We would be working with our auditors as partners in developing the financial training programs. For smaller organizations without the capacity or the budget to house the software, the Museum of Science and Planetarium can also act as the host organization, expanding its server use. This range of services will be offered throughout the state and would be accessible on-line.

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
In the first year, the MMOSP would implement the project management software and develop training programs developed for financial planning and project management. Thirty people participate in training programs and begin to implement improved systems in their organization.
