Demolition and Reconstruction of Shands Pier

Requester: Hon Christy Fitzgerald, Chairman Organization: Clay County Board of County Commissioners

Project Title: Demolition and Reconstruction of Shands Pier Date Submitted 1/15/2004 3:36:59 PM

Sponsors: Wise

Statewide Interest:
This capital outlay initiative: 1) serves important local and regional needs;2) meets a documented need; 3) addresses a statewide interest; 4) is intended to produce measurable results; and 5) has tangible community support to members of the Legislature and a state agency. The demolition and reconstruction of Shands Pier will continue to provide our only recreational Pier Fishing resource within Clay County. This facility, due to its length and access to the St. Johns River provides recreational fishing opportunities to county and regional sports fishermen. Economic benefits such as gas sales, fishing supplies, and food sales will benefit county businesses. We consider the demolition and reconstruction of this pier a major priority for the citizens and visitors to Clay County and elsewhere. An issue of statewide importance among the states recreation providers (see Florida Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan CH.5-12, 13) is the resources and facilities offered by major suppliers total for the state is (6) with only (1) in Clay County. As you can see the loss of 1 Public Access Pier would be a great blow to the state plan.
