Statewide Interest: |
Children with insulin dependent diabetes from all areas of the state attend programs providing diabetes education and motivation. This is the only residential, educational and treatment opportunity in the state offering programs thoughout the year. The goal is to teach the children ages 6 though 18 and their families good diabetes management including self-injection, blood glucose monitoring, good nutrition and and exercise therapy. Empowering the youngsters motivates them to comply with their medical regimen which results in reductions in lost school time, less emergency room visits and less costly long-term medical complications due to diabetes. Volunteer staff from medical, nursing and pharmacy schools in Florida learn state of the art diabetes care for health professionals thus furthering their ability to work with the current epidemic crisis of diabetes. |

Project Description: |
The organization sponsors program opportunities throughout the year in various parts of the state. These events include 1)Family Weekend Retreats providing in-depth educational seminars in diabetes management for parents and grandparents presented by endocrinologists and diabetes educators. Presently 3 weekends per year are held in Tampa, West Palm Beach and Gainesville. 2)Buddy/Friend programs allow the siblings and friends of the children with diabetes to live like their friend with diabetes for the weekend thus providing diabetes awareness and education to members of the child's support network. Presently 3 events per year are held in Tampa and DeLand. 3)Education Days. One Day programs sponsored in conjuction with local endocrinologists or diabetes centers. Programs held in Homestead, Boca Raton, St. Petersburg and Gainesville. 4) Summer Camp programs offer daily diabetes education classes and psycho-social support in a relaxed atmosphere and emphasize good nutrition and exercise and medically supervised recreational programs. Camps are held from June to mid-August in Tallahassee, Tampa Bay area and DeLand. Funding requested will be used to expand the number of attendees and reduce the barriers to children from indigent families that limit their participation. Organization staff will work primarily with CMS caseworkers to ensure access to programs for children and youngsters with type 2 diabetes. |
