Project Title: Community Care for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Senior Citizens Date Submitted 1/8/2004 11:22:16 AM

Sponsors: Fasano

Statewide Interest:
The Deaf and Hearing Connection for Tampa Bay is a non-profit organization that is requesting a state appropriation to provide services specifically to deaf and hard of hearing senior citizens in Pinellas and Pasco Counties. There is no other local agency providing case management services specifically to deaf and hard of hearing senior citizens using American Sign Language. There are approximately 168,000 deaf and hard of hearing citizens in the Tampa Bay area and the costs of providing sign language interpreting for case management and counseling are $55 per hour which can be avoided by having services provided by deaf professionals or those who are proficient in American Sign Langauge. This project has the support of Pinellas and Pasco County stakeholders.

In addition, funding would be used to aid the organization in providing other vital services including community education, counseling, case management, hearing aids and evaluations, for deaf and hard of hearing citizens throughout Pinelllas County and to support the agency's 54-unit apartment complex for low-income deaf and hard of hearing residents.
