Consistent long term research and monitoring is the key to prediction and mitigation/control of Florida red tides that are costly to Florida's economy as shellfish beds are closed and tourism dollars evaporate in the face of coastal fish kills and public health concerns.

Project Description:
The Florida Red Tide Alliance is seeking funding of $1 million for FY 2004/2005 for Mote Marine Laboratory to pursue research and development of advanced monitoring and prediction capabilities for red tide blooms, public education and mitigation of red tide effects. These funds will address projects in cooperation with the Florida Red Tide Alliance, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and The Florida Harmful Algal Bloom Task Force, including: 1) Operational support for the Red Tide Automated Underwater Surveillance Vehicle at Mote. 2) Public Heath issues including exposure to air-borne toxins, neurotoxic shellfish poisoning & toxic metabolites. 3) Mitigation and Control processes, clay flocculation, fish cleanup, treatment with ozone and chlorine. 4) Nutrient monitoring for bloom development forecasting, Riverine input, atmospheric deposition and marine transport. 5) Public information and education (ongoing projects) with exhibits, website maintenance, travel & leisure industry collaboration.
