Project Description:
The lower St. Johns River Basin Initiative is an ongoing effore to restore and enhance the lower St. Johns River and its tributaries. Many factors threaten the health of the lower St. Johns River. As urban growth increased, so did the discharge of wastewater and storm water from urban areas. This increase in discharge has resulted in a steady decline in the river's water quality. Farming also has had an impact on the river in the form ofagricultural runoff. All of these factors contribute to algal blooms, which block the sunlight from reaching aquatic plants. These algal blooms ultimately affect the manatee and the fish which depend on the plants for food and habitat. Blooms of some algal species have a direct impact on fish and other wildlife. Funding through this initiative will help to restore and enhance the river. Examples follow of subprojects that could be funded through this request. This list is in alphabetical order and is not a complete listing. 1)Bunnell Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades 2)Implementation of Black Creek Sediment Stabilization-Water Quality and Flood Protection Enhancements 3)Implementation of Indigo Branch Stormwater Treatment-Water Quality Enhancements 4)Implementation of Jacksonville Master Stormwater Management Plan-Water Quality Enhancements 5)Implementation of Loch Rane/Bel-Med Regional Stormwater Treatment-Water Quality Enhancements 6)Implementation of Stormwater Treatment in the Doctors Lake Watershed-Water Quality Enhancements 7)Implementation of TMDL Allocations 8)Reuse and Service Area Expansions and Wastewater Treatment Improvements-City of Jax 9)Reuse Retrofitting-Clay & St.Johns Counties 10)Rural Wastewater Treatment Collection System Improvements-River Park 11)Septic Tank Enforcement Project 12)Stormwater Management-Nutrient Removal in Clay, St. Johns, and Putnam Counties 13)Town of Orange Park Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades 14)Tri-County Agricultural Area Regional Stormwater Treatment Initiative 15)Tri-County Agricultural Area Water Quality Protection Cost-Share Program 16)Welaka Wastewater Treatment Collection System Improvements
