Tanglewood Retention Pond Restoration

Requester: Paula Riggs Organization: Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners

Project Title: Tanglewood Retention Pond Restoration Date Submitted 1/14/2004 10:21:52 AM

Sponsors: Clary

Statewide Interest:
Tanglewood retention ponds are located in Sections 4, Township 2 South, Range 24 West. This is a system of four cascading retention ponds; area of the entire pond system is apporximately 150 feet by 1000 feet. The system was constructed in 1983, designed to treat stormwater runoff from several surrounding subdivisions prior to discharge into Gap creek. Gap Creek discharges into Choctawhatchee Bay. Choctawhatchee Bay and its watershed are listed as a priority water body by the Northwest Florida Water Management District. In their present condition the ponds are no longer able to treat the original stormwater design capacity, compromising the quality of runoff directed into Gap Creek. The ponds are in need of re-grading and cleaning the bottom to restore the infilitration capacity, reshaping and stabilizing the slopes, as well as replacing pop-off structures and the outfall pipe.

Project Description:
Tanglewood retention ponds are located in Sections 4, Township 2 South, Range 24 West. This is a system of four cascading retention ponds; area of the entire pond system is approximately 150-feet by 1000-feet. The system was constructed in 1983, designed to treat stormwater runoff from several surrounding subdivisions prior to discharge into Gap Creek. In their present condition the ponds are no longer able to treat the original stormwater design capacity, compromising the quality of runoff directed into Gap Creek. The ponds are in need of re-grading and cleaning the bottom, re-shaping and stabilizing the slopes, as well as replacing pop-off structures and the outfall pipe. Best management practices for erosion control will be employed during the construction activities to prevent water quality impacts

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? Yes
Has the project been submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection? Yes
DEP Identfying Number: OT20032029

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
: The original design of the stormwater treatment ponds has been degraded, thus compromising the quality of stormwater that is directly discharged into Gap Creek and the Choctawhatchee Bay. Improperly or non-treated stormwater runoff from a well developed sub-division will be highly detrimental to the receiving water body. The stormwater carries oils and automobile fluids, animal waste, chemicals from lawn maintenance, sediments from disturbed and non-stabilized areas, as well as many other harmful elements. The ponds are designed to reduce the pollutant load through settlement and infiltration. By reworking the ponds and providing the proper treatment, Gap Creek and Choctawhatchee Bay will be protected from this type of degradation. Because the creek is used as a fishing and swimming area by the general public protection of the water quality in the creek will therefore protect the public health.
