Project Description: |
Sediment dredging would provide relief for the above-mentioned communities, and Miami-Dade County, through flow rights established in the canal, would lead the applicant to perform the dredging. Perform a complete survey of the canal including cross-sections at set intervals along the full length of the ditch (13,000 LF est.) to determine the canal hard-bottom elevations, the top of sediment elevations, the condition of the side walls, embankments and culverts. Perform an engineering design to determine the volume of sediments present in the canal and propose the removal of the estimated volume of sediments. Perform sediment dredging, embankment restoration, and culvert replacement as determined by the Engineer. Dredging, culvert improvements and embankment restoration will increase the canal's storage capacity, improve flow to the primary system, and minimize overtopping of the banks. The benefits would include reducing the possibility of damage to the residential and commercial communities including MIA from exacerbated flooding and improving the health and safety of the residents and tourists. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The project will help reduce the flooding risks for the area of Virginia Gardens, Miami Springs, Miami International Airport, and Florida East Coast Railways by restoring the original flow cross sectional area of the canal. This restoration process will enhance the conveyance capacity of the canal allowing it to be capable of receiving and transporting stormwater runoff at its full design capacity. |
