Statewide Interest: |
With 229,590 annual out-of-area visitors, the Estates have a tremendous direct economic impact on the community and FLorida. Studies have shown that cultural tourists spend more on restaurants, shopping and other attractions than other visitors ($348 per visitor). The direct impact of tourism alone would then be $79,897,320. The Estates is also a catalyst for many collaborative ventures including shared admission coupons, group tours that book at multiple historic sites as rferrals and marketing projects with area restaurants, businesses and attractions. The Estates is the 8th most visited historic home in America. As such, the Estates is the primary historic image for the Lee County Tourism Commission and Visit Florida, which aggressively market the region as one of tropical beaches, historic sites and cultural attractions. |

Project Description: |
This project will encompass the installation and upgrading of security and fire suppression systems for nine historic buildings. Fire suppression systems are lacking and exisiting fire protections systems are antiquated or inadequate. This project encompasses risk reduction and management techniques, improved security measures, upgrades to the existing fire detection and alarm systems, and the installation of automatic suppression systems. All of this will be done within the historic preservation guidelines as presented in the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Restoration and restated in our Historical Structures Report. |
|
Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The project will be measured by increased attendance and also by the use of historic buildings that we have been unable to use due to fire concerns.
The end product will be the effective utilization of important historic buildings that are on the national Register of Histroic Places, designated as a Florida Heritage landmark, and designated as a Save America's Treasure project. They will be equipped with much needed fire detection and fire suppression systems, allowing us the capability of protecting, restoring, and conserving these priceless treasures. |
