| Project Description: |
| Miami Children's Hospital is currently the only hospital facility in Florida and in the entire region utilizing some of the most cutting-edge technology in pediatric brain tumor surgery. Brain tumors are the #1 cause of childhood cancer deaths in our country today. The incidence of brain tumors is on the rise, especially in Florida. Forty percent of children diagnosed with a brain tumor do not survive after five years beyond diagnosis. Miami Children's Hospital is committed to providing the most effective and least invasive surgical procedures possible to children in order to increase their survival rates and improve their quality of life. Florida has an opportunity to maximize on the existing collaboration between leading physicians and scientists in the nation who have come together to faciulitate the establishment of an internationally recognized, comprehensive pediatric brain tumor center. At the core of the Pediatric Brain institute would be a powerful new tool for treating brain cancer: the intraoperative MRI. The institute offers care for a broad array of neurological disorders afflicting children and their families: Attention Defecit Disorder; Autism; tumors; epilepsy; headaches; neurogenetics and neurometabolics; sleep disorders; neuro-neonatal and neuroprotection/rehabilitation, among others. The MCH institute brings all of these specialties and strengths together and will soon be able to maximize and better support their talents. |
